The First Life

A Book on Freeing the Mind in the Age of AI

A philosophical book exploring cognitive partnership with AI -- when to delegate thinking and when to preserve autonomy.

The Story

Before building Second Brain, I sat down with Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini to think through what it really means to partner with AI. The conversations turned into a 20-chapter book organized across 7 parts -- from the core philosophy of cognitive autonomy to practical principles for individuals, builders, and society.

How It Was Written

Each AI brought a different lens: Claude for structure and nuance, ChatGPT for breadth and accessibility, Gemini for research and counterarguments. The book is transparent about this process -- the Note on Process opens with how AI dialogue shaped every chapter while human judgment steered the whole thing.

The Book

  • Part I: The Question -- Why our relationship with thinking is changing
  • Part II: The Philosophy -- The three freedoms and the First Life Protocol
  • Part III: Global Context -- Burden, paradox, and limits of AI partnership
  • Part IV: Architecture -- Trust, corrections, provenance, memory
  • Part V: Applications -- Economic agency, education, legacy
  • Part VI: Principles -- For individuals, builders, and society
  • Part VII: The Vision -- The unburdened life and an invitation

Design

Tufte-inspired typography with EB Garamond, dark mode, reading progress bar, responsive layout, and keyboard-driven font controls. Pure HTML/CSS/JS -- no frameworks, no build tools beyond a simple Python markdown converter.
